Sydney soprano Lauren Fagan never expected to win a place in the Royal Opera House's prestigious and highly competitive Jette Parker Young Artists Program.
She never really took her singing seriously until she was accepted into the Melba Trust, an Australian development program, in 2011, and two of her singing coaches had warned her she would have only a slim chance of success should she audition. So it was a surprise to be accepted from 400 applicants to audition for the program in London, and a bigger surprise to make it to the final round.
‘‘The day we were to find out if we were one of the five singers chosen was unbelievably nerve-wracking,’’ Fagan says. ‘‘By lunchtime I had to force myself to go to a class at the gym so I could stop checking my email every two seconds.’’
